Naan Kadavul is a 2008 Indian Tamil-language drama film directed by Bala. The title literally means "I am God" or "God himself", and is a phrase often used in Tamil folk songs. The film portrays the plight of those afflicted by HIV/AIDS, as well as those who want to do something for them. It was screened at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2009.[1] The screenplay was written by Bala after he read Jon Krakauer's book Into the Wild, which focussed on an American man who gave up all of his worldly possessions and hitchhiked to Alaska before dying there from starvation and an infected cut. Bala was inspired by the novel, and wanted to use it as the backdrop of his movie. The film was originally supposed to mark Bala's directorial acting debut. However, he later decided to cast Ajith Kumar instead of playing the lead role himself. The film is told in flashback, with other flashback inserts about Arul Murugan's (Ajith Kumar) life before his disease becomes too strong, while he is resting in a Ramanathapuram hospital awaiting death. He begins his tale where he was born in Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu along with his twin brother Siva (Sivakumar). His father was a drunkard and his mother could not stand his atrocities anymore. She dies off-camera. Arul, who is mute and deaf, is taken care of by his loving father alone. He works in his friend's shop and never found the time to get married. However, he does have a girlfriend named Leela (Bhavana) who is constantly proposing marriage to him because she is expecting a child from him and could not stand it anymore even though Arul denies her requests constantly. He comes across an international photographer named Swaminathan (Radharavi) while taking photos of the scenery in Ramanathapuram, India. Swaminathan suggests to move to a jungle in a foreign country in order to not be subjected to the infirmities of the human body. Arul agrees and the two run away from home with Swaminathan's wife Radha (Vivek). While traveling, they meet a group of nomads who they become friends with. They stop in a village where Swaminathan gets them jobs at a studio named Creative Zoom which is an international photography firm that hires people when needed. Later when they all travel from India, Swaminathan does not want to quit the job he has always wanted since he cannot get into any other firm even though it is obvious that he can easily get hired somewhere else. Arul despite the fact that he cannot hear or talk, is hired after meeting Swaminathan's boss named Rahman (Kumaresan). While working there, Arul becomes close to a young girl named Uma (Karunaas) who was abandoned by her parents and lives in the streets. Arul takes care of her since she was abandoned by her parents. She develops romantic feelings for him. Swaminathan suggests to go to America where they could live for years without getting old and getting death sick, something that happens due to their lifestyle of living outdoors. However, before he does this he wants to show his wife Radha his mother's house which is actually in Ramanathapuram. cfa1e77820
